The municipality of El Santuario is located in the east region of Antioquia. It is the smallest territory of the southeast of Antioquia and it has a temperature of 17 degree Celsius approximately. It is recognized for being the farm pantry of the east of Antioquia because the temperature is suitable to plant many types of vegetables. This condition allows the production of large quantities of agricultural products such as carrot, bean, tomato, and cabbage. It also has humorists, troubadours and singers that are recognized nationally and internationally.
El Santuario is founded on march 11th of 1765 by the Captain Antonio Gómez de Castro, its name is given because in the past there was a center of aboriginal rituals. The people born in El Santuario are called Santuariana .Now, it has a population of 27.076 inhabitants of which 16.000 live in the rural area and 11.000 live in urban area approximately. Its ethnographic composition is mainly mixed race and white, but the albinism is very common because members of the same family had sexual intercourse and Santuarianos were very jealous with foreigner people, they did not have contact with people from other cities.
The municipality is recognized for being the farm pantry of Antioquia because most people live in the rural area and work in the agriculture.Another important aspect is the economy based in clothing manufacture because over the last years the women started to make underwear and other garments in large quantities to send to other cities in Colombia such as Cali, Medellín and Bogotá.
